An interesting comment came up in another post and we’ve been going back and forth on it. I felt it might be helpful to others to add this here.
Has anyone heard about insurance that covers worms as livestock? Specifically in the US, but other countries welcome to add what’s available where you are as I know there are people from all over.
When doing an online search it was difficult to find specific information on the subject. The only thing I found was in the UK, which is great for those of you abroad.
My sister in law works for an insurance firm in Kansas and says that there is coverage under agriculture insurance that SHOULD cover worms as livestock, but not all companies offer it. She is going to have the ag staff look into it and get back to me next week. She’s pretty sure her company does but doesn’t know any details. When I called our local Colorado police State Farm agent he said they don’t cover compost worms, just mammals, but he has heard of it. Although our homeowners policy does cover a small number of my current herd since they are basically like any other property, so that was good to know. It may not hurt to check your own policies to find out if yours would be covered in case a whole home loss.
I find this absolutely amazing if it’s available, especially for those who have large farms and would be hurt if they lost their herd, or even a large part of it due to fire, flood and whatnot.
