So I am doing a little experiment with bedding. I got my first 1000 worms about 2 months ago. They went into a 27 gallon tote with compost for bedding. The worms did really well, even though I probably could have fed them more (I am afraid of overfeeding). What I don't like about the compost is that it is hard to tell difference between that and castings. Plus I need to find a reliable consistent bedding for the large continuous flow bins that I will be building in the next couple of months. Unfortunately, this time of year, I do not have the ability to produce enough of my own compost, leaves, wood chips or any of that to fill the bins. What I decided to do was to try shredded cardboard egg crates, as I have a ton of them. I shredded enough for about 5 inches in another 27 gallon tote, and mixed a few handfulls of the bedding from my other tote and let it sit moist for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I transfered all of my worms into the new tote, and left the previous bedding in that tote, since there are a ton of cocoons, so I want to let them hatch in that one. So I guess I am doing 2 experiments at one time. This morning I opened the new tote, and worms were everywhere on the sides and top of the new tote. Rounded them all back up, left the lid off, covered the bedding with moist newspaper, and left the light on. Today I will feed. I want to see how long it takes the worms to get aclimated to the new bedding, and see how it takes for the worms to go through the bedding and turn it into castings. I'll update when I have more to share. Thanks Captain Matt for what you do.
